In 1787, Judge John Cleves Symmes of Morris Town, NJ, petitioned Congress for a grant of 2 million acres of some of the most pristine and coveted land in the old Northwest Territory, the land between the Miami rivers. The following year, 1788, on the Ohio river’s northern shore, Symmes and the first pioneers founded the first settlements that would grow into the vital, historic river port of Cincinnati.
