How Covington's "Shining Stars" Relit Region's Passion for Baseball
NKY History Hour - 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2021
COVINGTON, KY -- They were the "Champions of the West" in the early days of baseball.
In the late 1800s, there were dozens of amateur ball clubs in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, but it was the Covington Stars, the city's first professional club, that revived interest in the sport after the Cincinnati Red Stockings disbanded in 1870.
For two years, 1875 and 1876, the Stars drew thousands of fans to their games on their home field on Covington's Madison Avenue. Then the Reds returned, joined the National League and initiated new rules that prohibited independent clubs like the Stars from playing against other pro teams. And so the Covington Stars' blaze was extinguished - but not before it reignited fervent interest in baseball in Northern Kentucky and beyond.
In the next Behringer-Crawford Museum NKY History Hour on August 11, filmmaker/historian Cam Miller will discuss his 2014 award-winning documentary, Our Shining Stars: The Story of the Star Base Ball Club of Covington, KY, shedding light on the Covington’s squad and providing evidence that, without the Stars, professional baseball in the Cincinnati region would have taken a different path.
The virtual presentation will take place via Zoom at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 11.
