Dr. John Rakovan Miami University, Oxford, Ohio is a big fan of that group of minerals collectively described as apatite. His personal apatite collection is outstanding for its diversity of localities and crystal perfection. A recent addition to that collection is a specimen of fluorapatite from the Sauberg mine, the type locality for apatite. It has a pedigree that takes it back to the very vein from which it was mined, and it is handsome crystal group.\
\
Because apatite is fairly common, it is not surprising that it has been collected and used since antiquity. Beads of apatite have been found at a Neolithic archeological site that dates to the 6th millennium BCE. What is surprising is that apatite was only recognized as a distinct mineral in the late 18th century. This is in part because it is easily confused with other minerals, hence the name apatite that is derived from the Greek word “to deceive”. The talk will trace the history of human use and recognition of apatite as a new mineral as well as the geology of its type locality.\
